In Defense of Men, Volume I, Part I: Thirst (Contains Explicit Material. Reader Discretion Advised)
Sex: the thing that takes up the least amount of time and causes the most amount of trouble.
-John Barrymore
Where did this come from? Who started The Thirst Movement and when did it start? I hear this thrown around by both men and women, but mostly from more younger women about guys. I also hear it more from older men about younger men. Basically, young men comprise most of the Thirsty Group.
Urban Dictionary defines thirst as a form of lust or want from the opposite sex... Apparently, according to women and older men, young and especially single men are in a constant state of thirst or desiring a woman for...intimate situations, per se. Younger women and older men not only acknowledge the thirst of young men, but they tend to acknowledge it with a substantial amount of cynicism. This cynicism seems a frivolous, however.
Males' sexual prime tends to be from their teens to their late 20's, and it steadily declines once the 30's are reached. Females' sexual prime tends to occur later than males, but there is belief that this is probably due to the social expectations of women which can mentally restrict their sexual willingness and exploration. Men and women alike tend to ridicule women for being hoes while male hoes are all but ignored.
So, young men love sex and the pursuit of it and we all know that. Their female cohorts and older males may not share that same level of lust, or thirst as they would say. Couple that with sex being a natural urge held by nearly everyone, what is the problem? The Thirst Movement is bullshit.
Look, guys can be creepy. Jerry Sandusky is a male. What a surprise. Bernie Madoff is a male. You don't say? James Egan Holmes, the shooter in the horrific Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting, yet another male. I could go on for the next 100 years naming atrocities at the hands of men. I get it. However, a man simply thirsting after women for a round of "horizontal polka" (horizontal if he is boring...also, if you grew up in the TGIF era, you get the reference) does not deserve being on the list of serious social infractions. Shaming a guy becuase he recreates by pursuing busted hot links (shot out to Double-D) is like shaming a person for wanting to put on a sweater because they are cold (which I find myself doing sometimes...I'm horrible). Both are simply going about fulfilling a need whether it be warmth or vicarious orgasms through a woman (or women). I remember a girl in college during class blurted out "all guys want is sex." I felt like rebutting, "all girls want is no sex!"
This hilarious conflict is a microcosm of a larger issue I have. People tend to denounce the ways of others when it goes against their expectations even if those ways are innocuous. But I digress as I went over this in a previous post. Those men or women that are thirsty should have no shame and neither should they be shamed. If one is pursued by a thirsty person and they have nothing for them to drink (there's all sorts of entendres here that I'll leave alone) is it worth being annoyed or angered? These men or women have their own needs and they are simply trying to fulfill them. So long as they are not crossing the line in a way that involves molestation or any other forms of criminality, they are not causing any harm. They should be subject to rejection without the latent cynicism and ridicule of being labeled thirsty.
